Detailed Japan trip review

I recently returned from the 'From Temples to Fuji: Japan's Iconic Route' tour. The booking process on the website was straightforward, I selected my dates and extras without much fuss. Confirmation came through quickly. Flights were economy, as expected, and the hotels were generally good, clean, and centrally located in most cities. The tour logistics, like train tickets and transfers, were mostly smooth, though one bullet train ticket had a slightly confusing seat assignment which was quickly resolved by our guide. Our guide in Kyoto was particularly excellent, providing great historical context. There was a bit of free time built into the schedule, which I always appreciate, allowing for some personal exploration. The overall value for the price paid felt fair given the destinations and inclusions. I would advise future travelers to review the detailed itinerary closely for activity levels.

Good value, small hiccup

I booked the 'A taste of Tuscany & Rome' trip. The price was really good for what was included, flights and hotels were solid. My only minor issue was the initial communication about airport transfers; it took a follow-up email to get clear instructions. Overall, a positive experience for the cost.

Consistent service, reliable tours

This was my third time booking with Exoticca, after 'Treasures of Anatolia' and 'Coastal Cities & Cultural Treasures'. This time I went for 'South America's wonders: Incas & Galapagos'. Like before, the itinerary was well-planned and the local guides were knowledgeable. I appreciate that they've maintained their quality over my different bookings. It's why I keep coming back, frankly.

Does anyone know if their free flight upgrades are actually 'free' or if they just bake the cost into the package price? Saw a deal for that on a trip to Africa.

K Kate 1 month ago
From my experience, when I saw a 'free flight upgrade' on an Australia trip, it usually meant they were giving you a better class of service (like premium economy instead of basic economy) at no *additional* charge *from the quoted package price*. It's not like they're just giving you a cheaper flight and calling it an upgrade if that makes sense.

Yeah, I think it's more like a promotional bonus. You're already paying for the flight as part of the package, and they're just upgrading that specific component instead of adding on extra cost for it.

Is Exoticca legit? I see some really good prices for places like Galapagos and Japan, almost too good to be true compared to what I've seen on other sites like Expedia or Trafalgar.

I went on their 'Algarve Sun and Coastal Gems' tour and it was totally legit. Everything was as advertised, hotels were good. They specialize in packages, so I think that's how they get better rates than booking everything separate.

Yeah, they're a real company. I think they can offer competitive pricing because they probably buy blocks of flights and hotels, so you're getting a package deal. It's not a scam if that's what you're worried about, lol.

Thinking of booking a trip to Japan for next spring, but it's a big chunk of money. Does Exoticca ever do like, Black Friday sales or anything that could apply to trips way in advance?

D Dana Lindqvist 1 month ago
Oh for sure! They have sales pretty often, like flash sales and definitely around big shopping holidays like Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Sometimes they even have 'early bird' discounts for booking well ahead.

Yeah keep an eye out, I snagged a good deal on their 'Coastal Cities & Cultural Treasures' during a holiday sale last year, and it was for travel like 8 months later. Just check the terms, sometimes it's specific dates.

Hey has anyone done the 'Treasures of Anatolia' trip? Wondering about the group size and if it feels too rushed, like you don't get to actually experience anything.

S Steve 2 months ago
I did a different one, 'From Temples to Fuji', and our group was maybe 15 people? It felt good, not too big. They do pack a lot in but there's usually some free time built in to explore a bit on your own.

Yeah, I think most of their tours aren't super huge groups, which is nice. For the pace, it's definitely a pre-planned itinerary so it's not like you're backpacking, but they try to hit the main spots. Some days are busier than others.

Looking at the 'Canyons Vegas and iconic views' tour. What's the deal with payments? Do I have to pay for the whole thing upfront or can I do like, a deposit and then monthly payments?

T Tom M. 2 months ago
I paid for my 'South America's wonders' trip in two installments I think? A deposit then the rest closer to the travel date. I'm pretty sure they have options for that.

They typically ask for a deposit to secure your spot, then the final balance is due a few weeks or months before you leave, depending on the trip. Don't think they do monthly installments in between though.
